CNC Wire EDM Machining

We perform wire electrical discharge machining of complex contours, slots, profiles and precision parts on a Mitsubishi FA20.
The process allows us to machine hardened steels, carbide materials and other electrically conductive materials regardless of hardness, without significant mechanical load on the workpiece.

WHEN WIRE EDM IS REQUIRED

GEOMETRY THAT IS DIFFICULT TO PRODUCE BY CONVENTIONAL MILLING

Wire EDM is used where conventional cutting is limited by material hardness, part geometry or accuracy requirements.
The technology is particularly effective for:
complex internal and external contours; narrow slots; precision profiles; spline features; dies and punches; stamping tooling; parts after heat treatment; carbide components; parts with small internal radii; profile gauges; tooling components.

PRECISION CNC WIRE EDM MACHINE MITSUBISHI FA20

The Mitsubishi FA20 is an industrial CNC EDM machine designed for high-precision cutting with a wire electrode.
Working travels:
approximately X500 × Y350 × Z300 mm
Worktable:
approximately 780 × 630 mm
Maximum workpiece weight:
up to 1500 kg
Wire diameter:
approximately 0.1–0.3 mm
Controlled U/V axes allow us to produce not only vertical cuts, but also tapered and spatially offset contours.

OPERATIONS WE PERFORM

  • wire EDM cutting;
  • external contours;
  • closed internal contours;
  • precision slots;
  • profiled holes;
  • spline profiles;
  • shaped cut-outs;
  • tapered EDM cutting;
  • complex profiled surfaces;
  • die manufacturing;
  • punch manufacturing;
  • machining of stamping tooling;
  • gauge manufacturing;
  • finish cutting of hardened parts;
  • serial cutting of repeatable contours.

MACHINING HARDENED PARTS WITH COMPLEX INTERNAL CONTOURS

  • MATERIAL HARDNESS DOES NOT LIMIT THE PROCESS
    One of the main advantages of EDM is that material is removed by electrical discharges rather than a cutting tool.
    After hardening, a precise contour can be produced without the need to re-machine extremely hard material by conventional milling.
    This is particularly relevant for:
    • dies;
    • matrices;
    • punches;
    • cutting tools;
    • gauges;
    • hardened machine components;
    • tool steels.
  • CONTOURS INACCESSIBLE TO A CONVENTIONAL MILLING CUTTER
    Wire EDM does not require a milling cutter to access the entire profile.
    After a starter hole is produced, the wire can be threaded through the workpiece and used to cut a closed internal contour.
    This makes it possible to produce:
    • square and rectangular holes;
    • spline profiles;
    • polygonal holes;
    • shaped fitting profiles;
    • profile windows;
    • complex technological slots.
  • MATCHED COMPONENTS FOR STAMPING TOOLING
    A single programmed contour can be used to produce matching components with a specified technological clearance.
    We can combine:
    blank milling
    → preparation of reference surfaces
    heat treatment
    → achieving the required hardness
    Mitsubishi FA20
    → cutting the precision working profile
    surface / jig grinding
    → finishing surfaces
    inspection
    → verification of the finished tooling geometry
  • DIES & MOLDS
    The EDM department is part of our complete manufacturing capability for dies, matrices, punches and molds.
    Depending on the design, we can use:
    • 3- and 5-axis milling;
    • jig boring;
    • Mitsubishi FA20;
    • Hauser 3SMO;
    • Petewe PFS;
    • surface grinding machines;
    • heat treatment;
    • coordinate measuring inspection.
    This allows us to perform most of the technological route within one production facility.
  • PRECISION INTERNAL PROFILES
    The Mitsubishi FA20 allows us to cut internal profiles that are difficult to produce using conventional milling or slotting.
    Wire EDM can be used for:
    • internal splines;
    • profiled couplings;
    • shaped fitting profiles;
    • special profiled holes;
    • small batches of non-standard parts.
    The absence of significant cutting force also reduces the risk of deforming thin sections of the component.
  • CONTROLLED U/V AXES
    The Mitsubishi FA20 is equipped with additional controlled axes for the wire-guiding system.
    This allows the wire to be inclined relative to the vertical axis and used to produce:
    • tapered holes;
    • inclined walls;
    • different upper and lower contours;
    • technological angles;
    • spatially offset profiles.
    This capability is especially useful in the manufacture of stamping tooling and special production tooling.
