VERTICAL TURNING OPERATIONS

  • external diameter turning;
  • internal diameter boring;
  • face machining;
  • shoulder machining;
  • annular groove turning;
  • cylindrical surface machining;
  • tapered surface machining;
  • boring of fitting bores;
  • central hole drilling;
  • counterboring;
  • reaming;
  • machining of complex contours on modernised equipment with DRO;
  • rough and finish machining of large components.

VERTICAL TURNING WITH DRO

  • PARTS UP TO Ø3300 MM
    A horizontal lathe is efficient for long shaft-type components.
    For a large disc, ring, gear rim or housing, a vertical machining arrangement is more suitable.
    The workpiece is positioned horizontally on the faceplate, while its own weight helps provide stable locating.
    This makes it possible to machine parts with diameters of more than 3 metres and weights of several tonnes.
  • MACHINING OF HEAVY COMPONENTS
    Our vertical turning equipment allows us to mount and machine multi-tonne workpieces.
    Typical applications include:
    • large gearbox housings;
    • gear rims;
    • large flanges;
    • support rings;
    • discs;
    • rotor components;
    • components for metallurgical equipment;
    • parts for mining and power-generation equipment.
  • MACHINING WITH TWO TOOL HEADS
    One of the advantages of the heavy-duty Sedin 1532 is its two-tool-head configuration.
    Depending on the machining process, this allows us to:
    • machine different surfaces of the component;
    • combine roughing and finishing operations;
    • reduce auxiliary machining time;
    • work more efficiently with large surfaces and diameters.
    This is particularly useful when machining large discs, gear rims and housing components.
  • GEAR BLANKS & GEAR RIMS
    Vertical turning is one of the key stages in the manufacture of a large-diameter gear.
    On our vertical lathes we can prepare:
    • outside diameter;
    • central bore;
    • face surfaces;
    • hubs;
    • fitting surfaces;
    • reference surfaces for subsequent gear cutting.
    After vertical turning, the blank can be transferred to the 5A342P for gear hobbing.
  • LARGE-DIAMETER FLANGES
    We manufacture and restore large-diameter flanges.
    We can machine:
    • outside diameter;
    • internal bore;
    • face surfaces;
    • fitting shoulders;
    • annular grooves;
    • technological shoulders.
    Bolt-circle holes and other features can subsequently be machined on our milling or jig-boring equipment.
  • КІЛЬЦЯ ТА RINGS & LARGE DISCS
    Vertical turning is particularly efficient for parts with a large diameter-to-height ratio.
    We machine:
    • support rings;
    • tyres and band rings;
    • large discs;
    • covers;
    • faceplates;
    • flange rings;
    • technological ring-shaped components.
    We can machine both new workpieces and existing components requiring restoration.

REPAIR & RESTORATION

A New Part Is Not Always Necessary
For very large components, the cost of a new blank can be significant.
In these cases, we can consider a restoration process:
  • Inspection
    → identification of worn surfaces
  • Preliminary Machining
    → removal of the damaged layer
  • Weld Cladding
    → restoration of material, including the use of robotic welding with a multi-tonne manipulator
  • Vertical Turning
    → restoration of the required geometry
  • Grinding / Inspection
    → final accuracy

COMPLETE MANUFACTURING CYCLE FOR LARGE PARTS

From Blank to Finished Component

A typical manufacturing route for a large component may include:

1. Blank Preparation

Preparation of the metal or initial workpiece.

2. Vertical Turning

Main diameters, faces, bores and reference surfaces.

3. Boring

Precision fitting bores and coordinate-related holes.

4. Milling

Slots, holes, planes and other structural features.

5. Gear Machining

For gears and gear rims.

6. Heat Treatment

According to drawing requirements.

7. Grinding

Finish machining of critical surfaces.

8. Inspection

Verification of the geometric parameters of the finished component.

COMPLETE METAL MACHINING

  • VERTICAL TURNING + GEAR MACHINING

    One of our key advantages is the ability to combine heavy-duty vertical turning and gear machining within one production facility.
    For example:
    SEDIN 1532
    → preparation of a large gear blank
    5A342P
    → gear hobbing up to Ø2000 mm, module up to 20
    Heat Treatment
    → required hardness
    WMW Niles ZSTZ 10H
    → gear grinding of critical gears
    This allows us to perform the main stages of the manufacturing process for a large gear within a single production facility.
  • VERTICAL TURNING + BORING

    The main advantage of horizontal boring machines is their ability to handle components that, due to their weight and dimensions, cannot or should not be mounted on a conventional machining centre.
    Large rotary tables allow several sides of a housing to be machined, while substantial spindle extension makes it possible to work with deep bores and internal surfaces.
    On our vertical lathes, we perform boring of large central holes and internal fitting surfaces.
    If required, further precision housing machining is performed in our jig-boring department or on heavy-duty milling equipment.
